Get Excited About Your Goals Again

Each year at this time I normally host my Design Your Decade Workshop. This year, however, I’m far too focused on writing my book about gut health. I couldn’t leave you hanging, of course, so I thought I’d share a simple but impactful part of the workshop below. It only takes ten minutes, and will help you “keep your eye on the prize” when it comes to your own goals. If you like it and want to go deeper, you can always continue on with the DIY version of the workshop.

80% of people give up on their New Year’s resolutions by February, so if you’re losing steam, you’re not alone. But if you want to breathe some life back into the intentions you set at the beginning of the year, this quick ten minute exercise will help you do it. In fact, you can do this exercise any time, and I would recommend putting some version of it into your routine.

It’s simple: sit down and write (or type) out what your life looks like a few months from now, when you’ve stayed committed to your goal. This will work with any type of goal, from health, career, relationships, etc.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • How do you feel when you wake up in the morning? Picture it: You open your eyes feeling energized, confident, and fully in control of your day, no longer dragging yourself out of bed or dreading the to-do list.
  • What do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you see the strong, vibrant, healthy version of yourself you’ve been working toward?
  • How do your friends and family react to the “new” you? Are they inspired by the changes you’ve made? Do they notice how much happier, energetic, or confident you are? (Be careful, because this could also be a trigger. You really want people around you who will always want the best for you and be happy for you!)
  • What activities are you able to enjoy now that you couldn’t before? Maybe it’s running a mile, being more productive at work, playing with your kids or grandkids without being totally exhausted, feeling strong in your workouts, or finally feeling like “you” again.
  • How has achieving your goal impacted other areas of your life? Do you feel more fulfilled, more at peace, more connected to the person you want to be?

The point is to connect to the future version of yourself and really feel it – not just the goal itself, but the deeper reason you set that goal in the first place.
