Build Your Goals on a Strong Foundation

It’s the new year, and for a lot of people the excitement of resolutions has already faded. I’m not a big fan of resolutions, although it’s hard not to think of goal setting when opening that fresh calendar. Despite the best intentions, most people don’t follow through on their goals. A big reason why is because their goals don’t align with their values.

Why Your Values Matter

You may not spend a lot of time thinking about them, but your values are part of the strong foundation you build your life around. They are what keep you anchored when life throws you curve balls, as life often does. (I know I’ve had my share of setbacks the past few months.) They guide how you act, who you surround yourself with, and your biggest life choices. And, you guessed it - they influence whether or not you’ll achieve the goals you set for yourself.

That’s because if you set goals aligned with who you are deep down, you don’t need to constantly work on being motivated.

Here’s what I mean:

  • If one of your values is strong relationships, then maybe your aligned action becomes putting your phone down when your family comes into the room, or planning quality time doing something with your partner or spouse that you both love
  • If your value is personal growth, maybe you give yourself a new challenge every month that moves you out of your comfort zone.
  • If your value is health, you’ll naturally choose routines, foods, and support systems that help you feel energized and resilient.

When you build your year and goals on values, your habits, routines, and goals start to flow more naturally. It’s like fitting puzzle pieces together, rather than trying to put a square peg in a round hole, as they say.

What Are Your Values?

Before you set your next goals or the tone for your new year, take a few minutes to think of your top three values. If you need some inspiration, here is a great list of values by Brene Brown. Then ask yourself: “Do my goals align with these values, or pull me away from them?”

Three of my values are adventure, community, and health. They all work with each other and align with my goals. This year, I registered for a series of gravel bike races and through training and participating, I’ll get adventure, build my community, and get really fit. It’s somewhat of a carryover from last year, and already I’ve been reconnecting with old friends and making new friends with similar values and goals.

Remember - your goals should enhance and improve who you already are - not change what’s already great about you! By aligning your intents with your values, you’ll see greater success in whatever you set out to do.
